The Fondation Beyeler hosts part of a major traveling retrospective of Felix Gonzalez-Torres (American, b. Cuba, 1957-1996), one of the most influential artists of his generation. Including some rarely seen but also more known paintings, sculptures, photographic works, and public projects, it includes pieces from throughout Gonzalez-Torres’ short but prolific career. Drawn from public and private collections throughout the United States and Europe, this groundbreaking exhibition proposes an experimental form that is indebted to the artist’s own radical conception of the artwork.

Defying the idea of the exhibition as fixed and the retrospective as totalizing, the exhibition Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Specific Objects without Specific Form offers instead several exhibition versions, and none the authoritative one, all the better to present the oeuvre of an artist who put fragility, the passage of time, and the questioning of authority at the center of his artwork. At each venue in which the show will be hosted, the exhibition will open to the public and then halfway through its duration, it will be re-installed by a different invited artist whose practice has been informed by Gonzalez-Torres’ work. At the Fondation Beyeler, the artist Carol Bove will undo the show and re-install it from late-July onward — adding and removing artworks, changing such things as lighting, labels, and the order of presentation, in other words — effectively making an entirely new version of the exhibition.

The retrospective is curated by Elena Filipovic. It premiered at Wiels (January 16–May 2, 2010) including a curated version by Danh Vo and travels to the Fondation Beyeler, Basel (May 22-August 29, 2010), including a curated version by Carol Bove; and the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main (January 28–April 25, 2011), including a curated version by Tino Sehgal.

The tour of the exhibition will be followed by a fully illustrated catalogue documenting each version of the exhibition and including essays by Elena Filipovic, Danh Vo, Carol Bove, and Tino Sehgal as well as interviews with artists of various generations. Essentially a publication determined by the voice of artists, Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Specific Objects without Specific Form will underscore the decisive impact and importance of Gonzalez-Torres’ work on art practices today. Due to appear in 2011.

20 artists curating exhibitions in 20 galleries An innovative exhibition project–to take place in Vienna for the second time from May 6 through June 5, 2010–explores novel ways of cooperation between curators and galleries. For curated by_vienna 2010 the 20 participating Viennese galleries have selected one artist each, who will curate a show on “art&film” in the gallery spaces. There is a remarkably broad spectrum of artistic works that use or pointedly reference filmed images. With 20 international artists of high distinction, curated by_vienna 2010 / art&film attempts a comprehensive dissection of what is currently a particularly virulent web of relations in the cultural field–an exciting analysis that puts up for discussion currently prevailing institutional conditions as well as aesthetic explorations of space and time, and the quest for artistic and social scopes for action. The artistic positions emphasize both documentary, performative and conceptual approaches. References to film will furthermore be presented as a pop or mass phenomenon, i.e. as a symptom or indicator of social change. Structured diversity and dense contents will produce exciting and stimulating exhibitions. EL PROCESO COMO PARADIGMA

Arte en desarrollo, movimiento y cambio

En estos momentos, la sociedad global se enfrenta a una serie de procesos sobre los que, en apariencia, hemos perdido todo control. Los conflictos permanentes en varios lugares del mundo, la repentina desintegración de la economía mundial y las amenazas de cambio climático -por limitarnos a los temas que copan los grandes titulares- constituyen la demostración fehaciente de que nos encontramos profundamente implicados en unos procesos sociales, ecológicos y económicos cuya complejidad nos obliga a tomar conciencia de nuestras limitaciones a la hora de gestionarlos de una manera global, si es que ello es posible. De la misma forma, asistimos a un gran cambio, consecuencia del paso desde una cultura industrial, basada en la noción de producto final, a otra posindustrial y propia de la Sociedad red, construida sobre conceptos como comercio global, sistemas de producción e industrias de servicios.

Con ese telón de fondo, el arte contemporáneo más innovador ha dejado de aferrarse a la seguridad que representaba el objeto final, máxima expresión de un proceso creativo, para adentrarse en el territorio inseguro de lo imprevisible y de la generación continua y en vivo de la forma. Cada vez más, los artistas se dedican a explorar la complejidad, el aspecto temporal, la interdependencia y los procesos de auto-organización, abordando esos temas a un nivel científico que hace que sus obras se conviertan en experimentos y bancos de pruebas más que en sistemas controlables.

La exposición el proceso como paradigma, comisariada por Susanne Jaschko y Lucas Evers, muestra cómo el proceso va camino de convertirse en uno de los grandes paradigmas y estrategias creativas del arte contemporáneo y del diseño actuales. La exposición nos confronta con un arte en flujo y creación continuos, dotado de una existencia propia, que atraviesa por estados de crecimiento, mutación y declive. Las obras exploran ese territorio vago que se sitúa entre la pre-programación y la autonomía; entre el desarrollo presente y la aleatoriedad, proporcionando al hacerlo unas sorprendentes visiones sobre el carácter de los procesos no teleológicos y una novedosa forma de entender el arte: el arte como una forma de prototipado, de continuo prototipado de lo natural y generación de lo social.

El proceso como paradigma presenta en LABoral la obra de 25 artistas o colectivos, cuyas obras recorren los procesos biológicos, automatizados o sociales, o visualizan procesos en tiempo real.

Los eventos Interactivos? son un híbrido entre taller de producción, seminario y exposición. En ellos se crea un espacio de reflexión, investigación y trabajo colaborativo en el que se desarrollan y posteriormente se muestran las propuestas seleccionadas mediante una convocatoria internacional, en un proceso abierto al público de principio a fin.

Los proyectos desarrollados durante Interactivos? formarán parte de la exposición, que comisariada por Susanne Jaschko y Lucas Evers, pone de manifiesto el cambio fundamental de una cultura basada en el producto final (sociedad industrial) a otra fundamentada en el proceso. Interactivos?, que se anticipa a la exposición, está dedicado a la producción de proyectos en línea a este planteamiento teórico. Las siete propuestas seleccionadas en convocatoria internacional se desarrollarán entre los autores y los colaboradores durante el taller en las semanas anteriores a la inauguración de la exposición El proceso como paradigma, el 23 de abril de 2010.

Retrospective exhibition presented at WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels 16.01 – 25.04.2010

“Felix Gonzalez-Torres : Specific Objects without Specific Form” reflects the short but prolific career of Gonzalez-Torres, whose work engages critically with Conceptual art and Minimalism, mixing political activism, emotional affect, and deep formal concerns in a wide range of media, often using ordinary objects as a starting point—clocks, paper, light fixtures. Amongst his most famous artworks are his piles of candy and stacks of paper from which viewers are allowed to take away a piece. The constantly changing result offers a model of the work of art as unstable and precarious, like life itself. What emerges is a profoundly human body of work, intimate and fragile even as it destabilizes so many seemingly unshakable certainties: the artwork as fixed, the author as the ultimate form-giver, the exhibition as a place to look but not touch.

By offering two radically different versions of an exhibition devoted to Gonzalez-Torres’ iconic artworks, this retrospective insists that there is no correct, absolute, or singular way to present the oeuvre of an artist like Gonzalez-Torres whose entire practice insisted on both the fragility of the artwork and the questioning of authorities of all kinds.

El pasado lunes, 29 nos reunimos con la directiva del Museo para discutir asuntos relacionados al calendario de las exposiciones y el presupuesto. La fecha hasta el momento de la apertura de la exposición es a mediados de junio.

Como parte de nuestra investigación hemos encontrado paralelismo entre el trabajo de FGT y Ernesto Pujol. Nos encontramos en la fase de indagar en ellos mediante el estudio de los datos biográficos, la formación académica y ciertas preocupaciones conceptuales de ambos artistas con el propósito de tener un panorama más amplio de los artistas contemporáneos a FGT.
